The bedroom is undoubtedly one of the favourite rooms in a home, and whether you’ve just moved in or you want to spruce up your décor, creating a calm and relaxed environment can have a huge impact on the rest of the home. Not only do you spend almost a third of your life sleeping there, a bedroom also a place to relax or work, so having the right bedroom environment is essential. Over the next series of posts, we’ll be looking at how to create the ideal bedroom space – whether it is for a couple, children or a guest room.

The first step is deciding how you want to use the room, by looking at how the room is structured, and of course, your personal tastes. Thinking about size, storage requirements and arrangement can help you decide what kind of bedroom furniture you might need. If it’s a children’s room – would a bunk bed be a good option? Or perhaps a bed and study in one, if it’s for an older child, or a small space? For an adult, you might want to consider a luxurious oak bed, for a master bedroom. Likewise, for a guest bedroom, you might not need too much furnishing, but if it’s a main room, then you might want to create lots of wardrobe space. So whatever it is you need, you have a wide range of options for bedroom design.

As well as functionality, there are lots of different options of style for bedroom design as well. You might like something classic and rustic, in waxed pine or traditional oak. How about a contemporary style, with a minimalist, polished effect? Or alternatively, you may prefer a more extravagant romantic style, such as a four-post bed.

Another factor to think about is size, to ensure your bedroom is not overcrowded with too many items, and also has enough space to keep everything you need in the room. A useful starting point is to first consider where the bed will sit best and then build the picture of your ideal room around that. You can place a wardrobe or chest of drawers  by the side of the bed. You may want to add side tables or lamp tables, which are handy if you want to add a reading or night lamp. Another quirky addition to a bedroom might be a chaise lounge, as these add a relaxing feature, and also serve a practical purpose.

Contemporary or classic in design, bedroom furniture should ultimately create a setting you can feel comfortable in every day. The right combination of utility and visual appeal gives you a room in which you enjoy spending time and naturally feel at home in.
